What is PAN?

Permanent Account Number (PAN) is the tax registration number (ten-digit alphanumeric number) issued by the Income Tax Department (ITD) in India.

Obtaining PAN for FPI Registration

An FPI registered in India is required to obtain PAN before commencing any investment in the Indian capital markets. PAN is also a mandatory requirement for opening bank (cash) and depository accounts.

PAN Allotment via Common Application Form (CAF)

With the introduction of the Common Application Form (CAF), the PAN is issued by the Income Tax Department as part of the FPI registration process.

  • The information and documents submitted during FPI registration are used for PAN issuance.
  • Once allotted, an e-PAN (electronic PAN card) is sent to the applicant’s registered email address.
  • The e-PAN is valid and serves the same purpose as a physical PAN card.
  • In the event of any change in the FPI’s name, the FPI must update its PAN records within seven working days by applying for a name change with the Income Tax Department.
